On Saturday, a fishing expedition turned tragic after three boys drowned in River Karugoe in Njoro, Nakuru County.
The three, aged 11, 13 and 14 were grade 5 and 8 pupils.
Consoling the families, Lare MCA Philip Wanjohi urged parents not to allow minors to leave their homes without an adult in charge especially when they go fishing.
“We are just asking the parents to ensure that their children do not go fishing alone. They should go with an adult or somebody who knows where to go since we don’t want such an incident to happen again,” Wanjohi said.
To avoid such tragedies, here are safety tips during fishing:
One should start by wearing a life jacket to ensure that they do not drown.
Always be aware of the weather
Check the weather forecast before you go and avoid fishing during thunderstorms or other dangerous weather conditions.
Even strong swimmers should wear life jackets. This is because the waters can get rough and boats may capsize.
Be aware of your surroundings
Watch your footing and be aware of slippery rocks or other hazards in the area.
Keep note of strong currents and hidden obstacles, as these can all pose dangers when catching fish from a boat or wading into the water near the shore.
Try not to fish alone
It's always a good idea to fish with a friend or let someone know where you'll be fishing and when you plan to return.
When fishing in new territories, ensure to have a friend or family member with you.
Caution when handling hooks, tools and knives
Be careful when handling hooks and sharp fishing knives to avoid injury.
Keep the equipment you are not using in a bag or a closed container.
Equally, distribute the weight of any items you bring to help maintain balance and reduce capsizing risk
Use sunscreen
Apply sunscreen to protect your skin from the harmful effects of the sun.
You can also use polarised sunglasses to reduce glare, making it easier to see into the water.
Be ready for basic First Aid
Keep a small kit handy with antiseptic wipes, bandages and tweezers for minor injuries.
You can also pack insect repellent and any medications needed in case of an emergency.
Stay hydrated
Bring plenty of water and stay hydrated, especially on hot days.
Know the regulations
Familiarise yourself with the fishing regulations in the area and follow all rules and guidelines.
Use Proper Gear
Use proper fishing gear for the type of fish you are targeting and make sure it is in good condition.
Stay in designated areas
When fishing, respect wildlife and avoid disturbing their habitats.
Don't stray into areas marked off or designated as locations, not for boats.
Also, leave no trace of anything you bring with you. Clean up your trash and fishing lines to help prevent accidents and protect the environment.
