A man was on Tuesday charged with defrauding a Kenyan woman living in the US of over Sh800,000.
Parmenas Kivinga Kisengese was arraigned before the Makadara Law courts in Nairobi on March 25 and charged with cheating, contrary to section 315 of the Penal Code.
Kisengese, who appeared before Magistrate Praxides Oduke, denied the charges and asked the court to release him on bail.
The prosecution told the court that Kisengese committed the offence on diverse dates between August 14, 2023 and August 18, 2023.
"On diverse dates between August 14, 2023 and August 18, 2023, at unknown place within the Republic of Kenya, jointly with another not before court, by means of fraudulent tricks obtained from Sandra Mercy Mwangangi cash Sh870,733 by falsely pretending to do online writing, a fact he knew to be false or untrue," the charge sheet reads.
The accused person's lawyer pleaded with the court for leniency and asked that he be admitted to reasonable bond or bail terms.
Magistrate Oduke released the accused on a Sh50,000 cash bail after he pleaded not guilty to the offence.
“The suspect has been released on Sh50,000 cash bail and hearing date slated for September 2, 2025,” Oduke ruled.
The police said Kisengese, a resident of Embakasi in Nairobi, was arrested on March 23, 2025 by officers from Ikanga police station in Kitui county who later handed him to their Embakasi police station counterparts.
The officers from Embakasi police station picked him from Ikanga police station on the same day he was arrested and took him into their custody where he stayed until his arraignment.
The complainant, according to police, made the complaint at the station on September 3, 2024.
Police conducted necessary investigations before pursuing the accused.
