Learners in secondary schools have been urged to explore Artificial Intelligence in their projects for the Kenya Science and Engineering Fair competition.

The call was made during the Eastern Region 2025 KSEF competition held at Makueni Boys.

KSEF is an annual event that provides a platform for Kenyan students to showcase their scientific, technological, and engineering projects and innovations, fostering STEM learning and promoting interest in these fields

Chief Judge Francis Kinaka urged all participants to conduct thorough research and obtain authentic data for their various projects, adding that a special focus should be on AI.

"To our project supervisors, we urge you to train these young scientists in coding skills. If we look around the world, one of the big drivers is AI, and that is our takeaway today," noted Kinaka.

He emphasized the need for well-equipped personnel in schools to sustain better solutions for global problems.

"Our scientists of tomorrow need to be bold and aware of the current world. Teachers must provide learners with the knowledge to prepare students for tomorrow's world," he said.

"Many students were recycling past projects without any improvement, which may not make much sense."

Kinaka stated that for a project to be worthwhile, research should be conducted for at least six months before presentation.

In the competition, Moi High School Biruli ranked first, followed by Makueni Boys in second place. Ikuu Boys ranked third.

Machakos Girls, the best-performing girls’ school, ranked fourth and was followed by Kibirichia Girls School.

Makueni Boys Chief Principal Francis Mutua welcomed the performance of his students, attributing their success to exclusive research, which led to outstanding results.

Moreover, he highlighted the impressive creativity among learners, which he said was crucial in raising the bar of the competition a notch higher.

Among the counties that participated, Machakos County emerged as the top, with Makueni as the second runner-up. Position three went to Embu, followed by Meru in fourth, Tharaka Nithi in fifth, Kitui in sixth, Isiolo in seventh, and Marsabit in eighth.

The national competition will be held from April 6 to April 12 in Kiambu.
