A journalist sustained injuries after he was hit by a motor vehicle in Mwingi, Kitui County.

Wycliffe Kyalo, a correspondent attached to the local radio station Athiani FM, was rushed to the hospital following the incident that occurred on the outskirts of Mwingi Town on Thursday.

The motor vehicle, a double-cabin pickup, hit a motorcycle he was riding from behind.

Kyalo, however, told The Star that he was discharged and is out of danger. He is recuperating at home.

"I was riding my motorbike from Nguni towards Mwingi Town when I was hit from behind by a speeding motor vehicle," Kyalo told The Star by phone on Friday.

The journalist was rushed to a private hospital within Mwingi Town, where he was treated and discharged.

Kyalo said his left hand was fractured in the incident. His legs were also injured.

"My motorbike was extensively damaged. I use it to traverse the county as a means of transport as I discharge my journalistic duties," Kyalo said.

Both the wreckage and the vehicle were towed to Mwingi Police Station for inspection and other necessary actions.

The two occupants who were in the motor vehicle when the accident occurred recorded their statements with the police and left the station.

Kyalo said he does not know the two individuals or the owner of the vehicle that hit him.

The incident happened barely a fortnight after a former NTV journalist was killed in a road accident in Nairobi.

Police said Silas Apollo, who at the time of his death was working with Nairobi Law Monthly, was hit and killed by a speeding car on the night of Thursday, April 10.

Apollo’s body was taken to the City Mortuary after the fatal road accident.

A family member said they were informed at the mortuary that he was hit by a speeding car along Kiambu Road.

“They say the body was recovered from Kiambu Road. We are waiting for more,” the family member said after viewing the body at the City Mortuary.

Apollo is believed to have been crossing the road on foot when the accident happened.

Police said the journalist was not immediately identified, but the body was moved to the mortuary pending autopsy.

The case was initially reported as “unknown person hit by unknown vehicle.”

Police said the motorist involved in the Valley Road accident later drove to Lang’ata Police Station, where he reported that he had hit a dog within the Kilimani area.
