Police in Athi River, Machakos County, are investigating the mysterious death of a 20-year-old man whose body was found at an apartment complex on Sunday morning.
Athi River East Subcounty Police Commander Anderson Mbae said the incident was reported to the Athi River Police Station by security officers manning the property hours after it occurred.
Mbae said night guards found the body of a male adult, aged 20, lying on the pavement with injuries on his hands and head.
“This occurred at an unknown time at Greatwall Gardens Apartments Phase 1 Airbnb. The report was made at the police station at 6.00 am,” Mbae told the Star on Sunday.
The Star established that a suspect has since been arrested in connection with the death. The matter was booked at the station as a suspected murder.
Orderly officers, the duty officer, DCI Athi River officers, and Scenes of Crime personnel led by the OCS visited the scene and found the body of Collins Wavinya, aged 20, lying on the pavement with visible injuries on the head and hands, suspected to be from a fall.
Police said a matchbox containing suspected smoked bhang was found in the deceased’s pocket. He was identified by a relative and is believed to have been a resident of the KMC area within Athi River Township.
It was established that in a room that was being used as a short-term rental, about 12 youths were partying and fled after the incident.
The rear bathroom window was found wide open, and police suspect it may have been the point from which the fall occurred—either by jumping or being thrown.
Inside the house, police found bottles of consumed spirits, several tumblers scattered around, and signs of commotion, including broken glasses and an overturned table.
A youth who was still drunk inside the house was arrested.
Police suspect the party was organised by two youths from Kitengela in Kajiado County and that not all attendees knew each other.
The scene was documented and cleared, and the body was moved to Shalom Community Hospital mortuary awaiting a postmorterm to establish the cause of death.
