Garissa Governor Nathif Jama has praised the county assembly for its vital role in providing oversight and constructive criticism to his administration.

Speaking at the official opening of the ultra-modern Garissa County Assembly Complex, Jama acknowledged the assembly’s support as instrumental in shaping policies that drive the county’s progress.

Over the past three years, his administration has worked closely with the legislative arm to build a stronger, more resilient county, ensuring residents receive the quality services they deserve.

The previous assembly chambers and adjacent offices were severely damaged by fire in January 2021. Despite firefighters' efforts, the blaze quickly spread, destroying offices used by members and staff.

Governor Jama commended the assembly leadership and engineers for completing the new facility on time.

The complex features a spacious chamber, public gallery, modern boardrooms, and dedicated offices for assembly leadership, committees, and the secretariat.

“This project will outlive us all and will forever be a valuable asset for future generations,” said Governor Jama, highlighting the building’s long-term significance for Garissa’s democratic development.

Speaker Abdi Idle described the occasion as momentous, recalling the difficult period following the 2021 fire.

“When fire gutted our old building, we faced one of the most challenging chapters in our institutional history. For months, we conducted house business in a small, crowded room, often holding plenary sessions in conditions not befitting a constitutional institution,” he said.

Idle also pointed out how food kiosks and grocery stalls had sprung up along the assembly compound’s perimeter, turning it into an extension of the local marketplace. This situation not only undermined the institution’s dignity but also posed serious security concerns.

Idle expressed gratitude to Governor Jama for his support and described the new building as a symbol of resilience and reform.

He emphasised the importance of respecting the constitutional separation of powers between the executive and legislature, urging the two arms of government to collaborate constructively rather than engage in friction.

“Let Garissa set an example where the executive and legislature support each other, collaborate constructively, and uphold mutual respect, so we can fulfill our mandates of oversight, legislation, and representation without unnecessary confrontation,” he added.

Majority Leader and Dadaab MCA Mohamed Farah, who has been elected three times, praised the transformation, calling the new assembly complex a symbol of progress.

“From the ashes of 2021 to a chamber of dignity in 2025, the Garissa county assembly stands as a beacon of resilience, reform, and renewed purpose,” he said.

Minority leader and Garissa Township MCA Hussein Mohamed highlighted the new chamber’s positive impact on civic confidence. “This structure assures our people that their issues are being deliberated in a serious, professional environment. This is how trust in public institutions is built.”
