Moi University academic staff have announced plans to strike from Wednesday over delayed salaries.

The decision follows the expiry of a seven-day notice issued by the university’s Academic Staff Union (Uasu) on August 12.

Uasu chapter organising secretary Nyabuta Ojuki invited staff to join the strike.

“We invite you to come out and make a statement about your situation. Join us on Wednesday, August 20, 2025,” Ojuki said.

He added that the decision was made after “long and careful consideration of our welfare as members of the academic staff of Moi University.”

In response, the university assured students, parents, and other stakeholders that services would continue despite the strike.

Acting Vice-Chancellor Prof Kiplagat Kotut acknowledged the concerns but said the institution remained committed to the smooth running of academic programmes and quality education.

“The university recognises and respects the concerns raised by Uasu. The University Council and management are engaging with Uasu leadership, the Ministry of Education, and other stakeholders to address the issues through dialogue,” Kotut said.

He expressed optimism that discussions would lead to a resolution and thanked stakeholders for their continued support.

Kotut emphasised the need for solutions that safeguard staff welfare while ensuring teaching, examinations, research, and other academic programmes proceed without disruption.

Preparations for the reporting of first-year students on Thursday, August 21, 2025, will continue as planned, he said.

Uasu is demanding that the university pay members’ June and July 2025 salaries according to the 2021–2025 Collective Bargaining Agreement and implement the Return-to-Work Formula agreed with the University Council on November 30, 2024.

The union also called for adherence to clauses on staff review, promotion, and retirement age outlined in the agreement.
