Two schoolgirls were allegedly sexually assaulted and left injured by an attacker in Bomet County, sparking outrage among residents amid growing concerns over safety.

The incident left residents of Murany village in Bomet East Subcounty shocked and concerned. It is reported to have occurred as the girls were returning home from school.

The victims, aged 10 and six years, are receiving treatment in hospital.

Bomet East Subcounty police commander Michael Singa said a suspect had been arrested.

“We already have a suspect in custody and he will appear before court as soon as we complete investigations,” he said.

According to police reports, the girls, who are in Grade 3 and 2, were allegedly accosted by a man who lured them into a nearby maize plantation.

Police said the children arrived home visibly distressed and, after being questioned by family members, narrated what had happened.

The disclosure sparked outrage among residents, who mobilised and assisted police in tracing and arresting a suspect linked to the incident.

The suspect is being held as investigations continue ahead of his court appearance. Singa said the suspect was apprehended with the help of members of the public and remains in custody pending arraignment.

As investigations continue, attention has turned to the recovery and welfare of the two children, who are receiving medical and psychosocial support.

The incident has renewed calls for strengthened child protection measures, with residents urging parents, schools and community leaders to enhance efforts aimed at safeguarding children from abuse and exploitation.

The police boss thanked residents for assisting in identifying and arresting the suspect to facilitate justice.

“We are urging our people to help us by reporting such criminal incidents, especially as concerns the safety of children,” he said.

“What we want is justice, and we will not rest until justice is served in this case. We will help protect our young children at all costs so that they are not endangered by such criminals,” said a resident.
