Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba has confirmed that 16 learners died following a fire tragedy at Utumishi Girls Academy in Nakuru County.

In a statement, Ogamba said the incident occurred last night and also left several other learners injured.

He conveyed condolences to the families, friends and relatives of the learners who lost their lives, and wished those injured a quick recovery. He said the Government was praying for strength and fortitude for all those affected during what he described as a difficult and painful period.

Ogamba further stated that a multi-agency team has been formed to respond to the incident.

The team brings together officers from the Ministries of Education, Interior and National Administration, Gender, Culture and Children Services, as well as the County Government of Nakuru, to coordinate emergency support services for those affected.

He also said investigations into the cause of the fire are ongoing and that updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
