The Kenya Highways Authority has closed a number of roads due to flooding occassioned by the ongoing heavy rains.

In public notices published Saturday afternoon, the Authority said it has closed Laisamis-South Horr Road at Namarai area.

It said this is because of a washout that occured at the section of the road after heavy rains.

KeNHA cautioned road users against attempting to use the section of the road for their own safety.

"We are actively monitoring the situation and will provide updates as the water recedes for restoration works to commence," Director General Eng Kung'u Ndung'u said.

The closure of the road adds to the temporary closure of Malindi-Sala Gate Road at Madumadu village Friday evening.

The road remained closed as of Saturday afternoon but motorists were advised to use the Girimacha-Sosobora-Krashini loop road.

Kung'u said this was due to River Sabaki bursting its banks and causing flooding after heavy downpour upstream.

Also closed is the Joska-Kamulu Bridge on Nairobi-Kangundo Road following an overflow of water on the bridge.

Kung'u further notified motorists plying the Naivasha-Nairobi Road that the section between Soko Mjinga and Flyover is experiencing flooding as a result of heavy downpour in the area.

As a result, he said traffic queues are building up on either side of the affected section.

"Motorists are advised to approach the section with caution and avoid overlapping so as to enable the police and traffic marshals to clear the queues within the shortest time possibel," Ndung'u said.

He further advised motorists to take heed of potential risk posed by Malewa River near Delamere Stop Over along the Nairobi-Nakuru highway.

Kung'u said the river is almost overflowing, heightening the danger to road users.

"The Authority advises motorists to proceed with caution when approaching the area. Should the river ovewrflow, we will temporarily close the road until conditions improve for safe passage."

The DG advised motorists against overlapping at the area as this will worsen traffic jam.

Kung'u also advised road users to approach with caution the Perkerra bridge located some 500m from Marigat town.

He said recent rains have caused trees to fall and block water ways under the bridge resulting in significant silt accumulation on the road surface.

"The Authority contractor is currently on site clearing the debris. We urge the public to exercise patience and adhere to instructions provided by traffic marshals at the location," Kung'u said.

The engineer, however, bore good news for motorists plying the Mai Mahiu-Suswa-Narok Road saying the road has been partially reopened.

He, however, advised caution saying heavy rains are still pounding the area hampering complete restoration of traffic flow.

Ndung'u said the affected section falls between the Weighbridge and Suswa Ranch, some 14km to 40km Mai Mahiu.

"Motorists are advised to exercise caution as they drive through the affected sections and follow guidance from traffic marshals lest they get stuck on silt deposits," he said.

Owing to the prevailing circumstances, Kung'u said KeNHA is working round the clock to ensure safety of all road users.

He said road users' safety is the Authorities priority and they remain committed to providing seamless connectivity to ensure safe passage of goods and services.
