Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi has explained why he was conspicuously missing during Friday's signing of a pact between President William Ruto and ODM boss Raila Odinga at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre.

A dispatch from Mudavadi's office released late Friday indicated  that he had a busy schedule with four key assignments during the day.

“In the early morning, Dr Mudavadi attended a Kenya Kwanza PG at State House, chaired by President William Ruto. The ruling coalition's legislators endorsed the signing of the deal between President Ruto’s ruling party United Democratic Alliance (UDA) and Raila’s Orange Democratic Movement (ODM),” the statement said.

Mudavadi was noticeably absent when Ruto signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Raila at the KICC Friday afternoon.

The duo inked the MoU to establish cooperation between the ruling UDA and ODM, the main opposition party.

Prominent leaders, including politicians from Kenya Kwanza-affiliated parties and the ODM, graced the event.

The statement said Mudavadi later held a meeting at his office around 10am before he represented Ruto in two events in Bomet and Kakamega counties as assigned by the President.

“In Chemaner village, Bomet East Constituency, PCS read the President's message of condolence to the family of Dr Aurelia Rono, Principal Secretary, State Department for Parliamentary Affairs during the burial of the father, Mzee David Kiplang'at arap Kirinyet.”

The statement added that Mudavadi also on assignment from the President, later attended a thanksgiving service at Friends’ Boys School - Lugusi, Kakamega county, where he presented to the school a bus that the President had promised in honour of the late Malava MP, Malulu Injendi.

The Prime CS's office said that despite his absence from the MoU siging, he fully supports the unity initiative.

“Mudavadi is not only a firm believer in the unity of the country but also one of the strong campaigners of the broad-based government. The signing of the pact between UDA and ODM comes hot on the heels of the merger of Amani National Congress (ANC), and UDA.”
