Police in Eldoret have
arrested a man accused of killing a Form 2 student who is alleged to have been
his girlfriend.
The incident happened at Gem
Farm within the Moiben sub-county of Uasin Gishu
The suspect, a boda boda rider,
surrendered to police on Friday, during which he is said to have confessed to
the murder.
Uasin Gishu county police
commander Benjamin Mwanthi says the suspect picked up the girl from a mixed
secondary school in the area where she was a student.
He then took the girl to a
lodging at a Gem Farm, where they spent some time together.
“The suspect later called the
local chief and informed him that he had killed his girlfriend,” said Mwanthi.
After informing the chief of
the heinous act, the man who operates his boda boda business in the same area walked
to the nearby police station where he reported the incident.
He said the chief and police
rushed to the scene, where they found the body of the girl covered in a blanket.
“He was then arrested and locked up as we launched
investigations into the incident,” said Mwanthi.
Mwanthi said the cause of the
killing was not yet known, but the man would be interrogated to give details.
The man is suspected of having strangled the girl after a quarrel over unknown issues.
Mwanthi advised parents to
always follow up on the whereabouts of their children, especially those who are
learners in day schools.
“As parents, we have to be keen
about the safety of our children in or out of schools,” said Mwanthi.
He said the suspect would be
processed after interrogation and statement recording so that he could be taken to
court.
”He is
helping with investigations after which he will be arraigned in court over the
incident,” said Mwanthi
The
incident sparked anger among residents who condemned the killing of the school
girl
