President William Ruto has urged Kenya’s under-20 men’s football team to give their best as they seek qualification for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) finals.
Speaking at State House during a flag handover ceremony, the President expressed optimism in the team’s potential, encouraging them to rise to the occasion.
In a gesture of encouragement, Ruto singled out the team captain by name.
The captain rose respectfully, acknowledging the President’s words with humility.
Ruto commended his leadership and confidence, calling him a symbol of the team’s fighting spirit.
He challenged the captain to lead the squad to the finals, promising to attend the match if they succeeded.
“Please make me come to the finals of AFCON. Do you want me to tell you how to make me come? Just play at the finals, and I will be there to cheer you on.
So, usiniangushe hapo, mng’ang’ane kabisa nitakuja huko kusukumana na nyinyi.”
(So give it your all — I’ll be there to support you.)
In attendance during the flag handover event were the Rising Stars squad, members of the technical bench, Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya, and Football Kenya Federation (FKF) officials, including President Hussein Mohammed, Vice President McDonald Mariga, among other members.
Ruto asked the FKF President to keep him informed, emphasising his keen interest in their journey while reaffirming his support.
He challenged him and the overall FKF
leadership to elevate Kenya’s football performance to match that of athletics.
He further noted that the government remained committed to enhancing the country’s sports infrastructure, which would support youth, particularly in harnessing and nurturing their talents.
“Our prime focus is to elevate Kenya’s profile in the globe and commercialise our football — just like in athletics," he said.
"Our best wishes to the team that has been placed in Group B with Nigeria, Morocco and Tunisia."
