How senators voted in Guyo impeachment trial

Isiolo Governor Abdi Guyo on Tuesday survived an impeachment attempt brought against him by a section of members of the county assembly.

Before voting, Guyo had put up a spirited fight, citing in his preliminary objection that no sitting was held in the county assembly to discuss and vote on the impeachment motion.

Appearing before the Senate with a high-powered legal team, Guyo urged lawmakers to throw out the motion, arguing that it failed to meet the constitutional threshold and was based on forged documents.

He maintained that all three allegations brought against him - gross misconduct, abuse of office, and violation of the constitution and other laws- were baseless and politically motivated.

After listening to the preliminary objection, Speaker Amason Kingi put it to the House to decide, based on the evidence adduced by the county assembly legal team, whether indeed a sitting was held to pass the impeachment motion.

"Now, therefore," Kingi intoned as he put the question to the House.

"The Senate resolves to uphold the preliminary issue raised on whether the County Assembly on the Motion of Isiolo held sittings on June 8, 2025 and June 26, 2025, to table, debate, pass and or vote for the proposed removal from office by impeachment, of the Governor of Isiolo County and accordingly Honourable terminates the proceedings for the proposed removal from office, by impeachment, of Abdi Ibrahim Hassan, the Governor of Isiolo county."

After casting their ballots, it emerged that 31 senators voted to support the preliminary objection that no sitting was held in the county assembly to discuss and vote on the impeachment motion.

On the contrary, 12 senators voted to oppose the preliminary objection and wanted the matter to proceed to a full hearing, technically meaning the impeachment motion was defeated on numerical strength.
