A Form Three student at Kakamega High School collapsed and died on Sunday afternoon.

The student was playing football with colleagues when he hit the ball with his head, collapsed,  and became unconscious.

He had attended the routine Sunday service with other students.

“Fellow students tried to offer first aid, but he was not responsive, forcing them to rush him to the school dispensary, where first aid was administered, but he was not responsive,” Kakamega Central police commander Vincent Cherutich said.

Cherutich said that the student was pronounced dead on arrival at the Kakamega County General Hospital.

The school principal Julius Mambili said the student identified as David Owuor did not have underlying conditions known to the school.

Mambili said that the school had already informed his parents, who live in Eldoret.

“The deceased was an outgoing student who performed averagely in academics. He was liked by everyone. We condole with the family. The family has lost, and we as the Kakamega school community have lost too,” Mambili said.

Mambili called for patience among the school community as a post-mortem is awaited to establish the cause of the death.
