Democratic Action Party–Kenya (DAP-K) leader Eugene Wamalwa has challenged Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya and Mumias East MP Peter Salasya to face him in the party’s presidential nomination race, if they believe they possess the necessary qualifications.

The leader alleged that there were behind-the-scenes manoeuvres by some within the party to orchestrate a possible takeover of the leadership or gain an upper hand ahead of the 2027 general elections.

“If you want to become party leader or presidential candidate, you are welcome to face me for the presidential ticket in free and fair nominations,” he said.

Wamalwa insisted that DAP-K is built on strong democratic values and that there is space for everyone to realise their political aspirations through proper channels.

He maintained that any ambition to lead the party or run for president must be pursued through open, internal processes, not through backdoor tactics.

“This is truly a democratic party that can allow us all to realise our political aspirations through internal democracy, without wrecking our party or washing our dirty linen in public,” he said.

The DAP-Kenya Parliamentary Group had raised concerns over reports of a coordinated effort to destabilise its leadership through a hostile takeover.

The party alleged that external forces had hatched the scheme through one of its leaders.

They said that the leader has been parading as a democrat and a defender of the people of Western Kenya, and has been doing the opposite.

The PG underscored that the leader has consistently benefited from the full moral, political, and legal support of party leadership.

“Any effort to launch an unconstitutional takeover of DAP Kenya, targeting Party Leader Eugene Wamalwa and the national leadership, will be met with resolute resistance. We are aware of his newly formed political party and caution him against attempts to destabilise DAP-K as he makes his exit,” the statement read.

The DAP-K Parliamentary Group expressed their full confidence in the leadership of their party leader, Wamalwa.

Governor Natembeya has since denied the claims of splitting the party.

He dismissed the reports as unfounded, affirming his commitment to strengthening DAP-K and giving it a broader national appeal.
