Over 200 law graduates petition for admission as advocates of the High Court

Any individual or institution disputing their eligibility or character now have 30 days to raise it in writing.

A total of 245 petitioners have formally applied for admission as advocates of the High Court of Kenya.

In a Gazette Notice dated August 1, the Judiciary's Deputy Chief Registrar Paul Maina announced that the applications were made pursuant to Section 15(2) of the Advocates Act.

The Act requires all intending advocates to petition the Chief Justice and have their names published for public scrutiny.

Any individual or institution disputing their eligibility or character now have 30 days from the date of the notice to raise it in writing.

"Any member of the public or institution who wishes to object to the admission of any of the persons named herein under to do so in writing," the notice reads.

Objections must be addressed to Chief Registrar of the Judiciary.

This process is a legal safeguard to ensure that only qualified and ethically sound individuals are admitted to the Bar. 

Successful petitioners will be called to the Bar in an official ceremony presided over by the Chief Justice or a designated judge of the High Court.

Admission to the High Court as an advocate is the final step for law graduates in Kenya who have completed their academic training.

They ought to have passed the bar examinations administered by the Kenya School of Law (KSL), and successfully undertaken the mandatory six-month pupillage under a qualified advocate.

Upon admission, the new advocates will be eligible to practice law in Kenya, represent clients in court, and offer legal services across various sectors of society.
