Performing at the Kenny G Concert

Coster Ojwang will take the stage at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre on September 27 for an electrifying four-hour show blending jazz with rich cultural rhythms. The artist promises an immersive musical journey that highlights his signature sound.

Speaking to the Star's Kalondu Musyimi, Ojwang confirmed he will bring his full set of instruments for the live performance.

“As part of the Kenny G concert, I’ll perform at least two tracks from my upcoming album Mbak Ndalo. Fans should expect an unforgettable experience,” he said.

“I’m only requesting if they can allow me to perform for 4 hours, so that when Kenny G comes on stage, he crowns it all,"  Ojwang said on how long he will grace the stage.

When asked about his stage setup, Ojwang explained that he’ll feature the usual instruments—saxophone, trumpet, guitars, and keyboard—along with his signature additions.

“I’ll also bring my usual quirks, including the horn and, of course, my voice,” he said.

Kenny G’s Influence

Ojwang admitted his relationship with Kenny G’s influence is complex. When asked if the jazz legend shaped his musical style, he responded:

“I’d say both yes and no. No, because back when I listened to his music, I wasn’t intentional about pursuing music—I didn’t even know the artist behind those Sundowner tracks. Later, when I began creating music seriously, my focus had already shifted to more indigenous and local sounds.”

Kenny G’s Influence on His Style

Coster Ojwang shared a nuanced view on whether Kenny G influenced his musical journey.

“It’s both yes and no,” he explained. “No, because when I used to listen to Kenny G’s music, I wasn’t serious about pursuing music at all. Those were just tracks we heard on Sundowner without even knowing who the artist was. I wasn’t paying attention back then. By the time I started making music intentionally, my style had already evolved toward a more native and locally inspired sound.”

“And yes, because at the back of my mind, those memories and melodies are lingering and they will play a part in how I make sounds, but not like intentionally,” he added.

From Migori Shores to Nairobi Stages

Coster Ojwang, widely recognised as “the fisherman,” proudly ties the nickname to his Migori County roots and sees himself as an “ambassador of African music.”

He recalls a childhood deeply rooted in rural life, spending his early years entirely in the village before returning there for a year after high school and eventually transitioning to urban life.

Ojwang reflects on being part of one of the last generations to fully experience both worlds—traditional village living and modern city dynamics.

This duality, he says, shaped his outlook and gave him a unique appreciation for opportunities like performing with a full band, having grown up with very limited resources.

The upcoming Kenny G concert is powered by Stanbic Bank, a leader in vehicle asset financing, in partnership with Safaricom through its exclusive Emerald package, EABL—makers of Tanqueray and Tusker Malt—and brought to life by Radio Africa Events.
