Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has declared that Meru County remains firmly behind President William Ruto’s administration despite the shifting political tides in Mt Kenya.

Speaking at the State House on Friday during a meeting with grassroots leaders from Meru, Kindiki assured the President that the county’s support for the Kenya Kwanza government is strong and intact.

“Meru County, as we speak right now, is one of the counties where government support is not in question. If anyone wants to confirm, let them come to the ground and see for themselves,” the Deputy President said.

Kindiki noted that while there are still issues to smooth out, the Kenya Kwanza administration enjoys overwhelming backing from the people of Meru.

He attributed this to collaborative work with elected and non-elected leaders in the county, as well as continued engagement with the grassroots.

"Na bado! There's still a bit of work we want to smooth out, one or two things, as we work together with these brothers of mine, governors, MPs, senators, and other leaders, even those who were not elected," he added.

The DP also lauded grassroots leaders for honoring the State House invitation and thanked President Ruto for hosting them.

He emphasised the administration’s commitment to ensuring that the Meru region remains central in Kenya Kwanza’s development agenda.

The meeting comes at a time when Ruto’s administration has intensified efforts to consolidate support in Mt Kenya, a region that has become a political battleground following the impeachment of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua in October last year.

Gachagua has since rebranded himself as an opposition figure, rallying the region through his new Democracy for Citizens Party.

To counter this growing rivalry, the government has been holding occasional empowerment forums and meetings with regional leaders.

Earlier this week, on Wednesday, President Ruto hosted grassroots leaders from Kiambu County at State House.

Political analysts say these meetings are part of a broader strategy to cement Kenya Kwanza’s influence in Mt Kenya ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The region, which overwhelmingly voted for Ruto in 2022, remains critical to his re-election bid.

For now, Kindiki insists that Meru stands solidly behind the government.

“Sisi ni watu wa Tutam,” he said.
