Morocco’s Oussama Lamlioui etched his name into African football history by claiming the Puma Top Scorer award at the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) in Nairobi.

The prolific striker scored six goals, propelling the Atlas Lions to their third CHAN title with a dramatic 3-2 victory over Madagascar in the final at Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani.

The thrilling finale, witnessed by a packed stadium, marked the culmination of two weeks of captivating football, showcasing Africa’s finest home-based talents.

Madagascar, making their first-ever appearance in a CHAN final, put up a spirited fight but were ultimately undone by Morocco’s precision and clinical finishing.

Lamlioui’s heroics not only secured personal glory but also underscored Morocco’s dominance in the tournament, as the team displayed flair, resilience, and tactical brilliance throughout their campaign.

Goalkeeper Marc Diouf was voted Best Goalkeeper of the tournament, while the Teranga Lions also scooped the prestigious Fair Play Trophy.

The final was graced by President William Ruto, FIFA President Gianni Infantino, and CAF President Patrice Motsepe. 

In his remarks, Ruto hailed Morocco’s achievement while reflecting on the broader significance of the championship.

“Congratulations, Morocco, on winning the CHAN 2024 Championship. This is a well-earned victory,” said Ruto.

“We appreciate all the teams, officials, and organisers who worked tirelessly to make this tournament a success. We take to heart the lessons of co-hosting this tournament, and we will use them to sharpen our preparation for AFCON 2027.”

He added that beyond football, the tournament highlighted Africa’s unity and potential.

“CHAN 2024 has affirmed the spirit of Pan-Africanism. It showcased not only footballing brilliance but also the bonds that tie us together as one people. This celebration of African excellence reminds us that our future is brightest when we stand together,” he said.

The President joined thousands of jubilant Kenyans in Kasarani to witness the continental showpiece, which also reinforced Kenya’s growing stature as a footballing destination ahead of hosting the Africa Cup of Nations(AFCON) in 2027.
