KANU Secretary General George Wainaina and two others who had been questioned in investigations into the killing of city lawyer Kyalo Mbobu were released on Saturday night.

The three were freed after being questioned.

Sources indicated that investigators did not find evidence linking them to the murder.

Speaking to The Star, Wainaina said he was informed of his release at around 10 pm after police officers who had been guarding him left his premises.

“I had two officers during the day and two at night. On Saturday, at around 10 pm, they abruptly left, saying they had been recalled,” he stated from a hospital in Nairobi.

According to Wainaina, the officers did not provide further explanation, only telling him he was free to go.

Wainaina explained that on the day of the murder, he briefly encountered Mbobu and another acquaintance, who was also questioned and later released at a hotel parking lot.

“This person found me in the car park. I was with my nephew. I was not with him for lunch,” he told The Star.

“When the person I met with Mbobu was questioned, he told police they had seen me at the hotel, and that is why I was questioned. Even the CCTV footage showed us only at the car park,” he added.

He said police only asked him to record a statement outlining his movements on the day of the killing, including his brief presence at the hotel.

Mbobu, a former chairman of the Political Parties Disputes Tribunal, was shot dead on September 9, 2025, in a daylight attack.

He was ambushed along Magadi Road, Nairobi, by a gunman riding pillion on a motorcycle, who fired multiple shots at close range, hitting his neck and chest.

The attackers escaped while firing in the air to disperse bystanders.
