A team of detectives is looking for a group of boda boda riders who burnt down an Audi SUV after an accident along Thika Road, Nairobi. The incident, which is the latest to involve the riders happened on Friday September 26, 2025 near Kenyatta University, police and witnesses said.

The car was vandalised and set on fire by a gang that said was angered by a fatal accident. Police termed the actions criminal and vowed to pursue those behind the same.

A driver of the Audi SUV was racing on the service lane from Ruiru direction headed to the city center when an oncoming rider who was riding on the wrong direction collided with his car.

The rider died on the spot, police and witnesses said. The driver stopped few meters ahead hoping to solve the matter when a group of riders arrived.

Witnesses said the group turned violent and beat up the driver forcing him to flee the scene for his life.

It was then that they looted the car and set it on fire.

It was reduced to ashes. A fire engine arrived at the scene but could not salvage the situation. The riders later turned violent and blocked traffic flow on both sides of the road for hours.

This caused a huge traffic jam for hours as police struggled to clear the flow.

Police arrived at the scene and towed the wreckage to the local station pending an investigation.

This is the fourth such incident to happen and involve riders in a month.

Similar incidents happened in Donholm in Nairobi, Thika Road near Juja and in Thika Town. The ones of Donholm and Thika Road involved Public Service Vehicles while that of Thika saw another Audi belonging to a police officer burnt.

Police said they are pursuing the gangs behind the incident. A team visited the scene of the attack and reviewed security cameras in efforts to identify those behind the incident. They want to charge the group with arson, malicious damage to property and robbery with violence.

Police have advised boda boda riders against turning violent at accident scenes.

“We don’t want such chaos. There are laws in the country and must be respected by all,” said traffic commandant Fredrick Ochieng.

This comes in the wake of calls for strict laws to manage the boda boda industry.

Officials have vowed to introduce new laws to bring sanity in the industry amid resistance from the riders’ officials.
