The body of a minor who was missing for hours was found floating in a septic tank after his suspected macabre murder in Majengo, Kitui Town.
Police said the mother of the one-and-eight-month-old boy had, on
September 28, 2025, left him in the house to go and buy medicine for her ailing
husband.
When she came back to the house minutes later, she found him missing.
She told police that when she inquired where the son was, the husband claimed
he had also left the house and left the boy therein alone as he went to
allegedly fetch charcoal from a nearby shop.
This sent a signal to the mother that something was wrong.
The couple stayed at a rental house in the area.
Neighbours insisted that they had not seen the man leave the house as he
claimed.
This prompted a search in the compound when they stumbled on the body of
the child floating in the septic tank.
The tank is usually covered by a manhole and police suspect the man
strangled the boy and dumped the body therein before covering it again.
The man who is the stepfather of the child was later arrested as a prime
suspect in the murder, pending an investigation, police said.
Police said they are yet to establish the motive of the murder.
The body was moved to the mortuary pending an autopsy.
