Kakamega Senator Bonny Khalwale in heated confrontation with a county official/FB SCREENGRAB

Drama unfolded in Kakamega when Senator Bonny Khalwale clashed with a county official in a heated confrontation over funds, nearly degenerating into a physical altercation.

The incident occurred during an inspection tour by the Senate Committee on Devolution and Intergovernmental Relations on Friday, which was assessing stalled development projects in the county.

In a video shared by the senator on his Facebook page, Khalwale and the official are seen exchanging sharp words, with the senator appearing visibly agitated.

At one point, Khalwale, clutching an envelope in one hand, pointed at the officer and declared: “In my lifetime, we will get you people arrested.”

The official, seeking to defend himself, attempted to cool the tension, saying: “We are here in a very objective way.”

However, the senator shot back almost immediately: “I am very serious and I am very objective.”

As the verbal exchange escalated, Khalwale was seen tapping, almost shoving, the official on the shoulder in an agitated manner, sparking concern that the confrontation could turn physical.

Those present, particularly committee chair Mohamed Abass and members of the committee, Senator Richard Onyonka and Catherine Mumma, quickly intervened to prevent the situation from spiraling out of control.

Onyonka stepped in, grabbing Khalwale’s hand as chants of “order, order” were heard from other committee members and observers at the scene.

The Kakamega senator later posted the video with a caption reinforcing his stance that accountability must be demanded from officials entrusted with public resources.

"I will not relent in holding both county and national officers responsible until every stalled project in Kakamega is completed for the benefit of our people., Khalwale posted.

The footage quickly circulated online, sparking mixed reactions from Kenyans.

The devolution committee was on a fact-finding mission in Kakamega to establish the status of development projects.

They visited Shamakhubu Level 4 Hospital in Shinyalu, Kakamega Referral Hospital in Lurambi, Butali–Chegulo Road and the Bukhungu Stadium.

“I pledge to put Governor Fernandes Barasa and the County Government to task until these projects are completed and delivered to the people,” Khalwale said.

“We will not allow public resources to go to waste. The people of Kakamega deserve accountability, transparency, and value for their money.”

The senator vowed to keep the County Government on its toes until every shilling is accounted for and every project is completed.

Khalwale, who has declared interest in the Kakamega gubernatorial seat, has intensified criticism of Governor Barasa's adminstration even as he positions himself ahead of 2027.
