MTRH discharges 13 mudslide survivors as search, rescue continues in Elgeyo

The Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) has discharged 13 patients who were admitted after being injured in the Elgeyo Marakwet mudslides.

The search and rescue mission in the area has entered its fourth day. More institutions and individuals are donating aid to assist the affected residents.

Acting CEO Dr Andrew Wandera said the hospital had received 39 patients with various injuries. Most of them are in stable condition.

Three wards were set aside to handle victims of the mudslides, including ten children and several elderly adults.

“We still have 23 patients with various degrees of injuries, but they are responding well to treatment and may be discharged soon,” said Dr Wandera.

He added that the hospital is well-equipped to handle such disasters.

Several leaders visited the patients to pray and wish them a quick recovery.

Those who visited included Senator Jackson Mandago, former MPs Jackson Kiptanui and Linah Kilimo, and Elgeyo Marakwet County Assembly Speaker Lawi Kibire.

Kenya Defence Forces personnel, police, Red Cross teams, and local residents are still combing through the debris to search for survivors or recover missing bodies.

So far, 25 people remain unaccounted for. The death toll has risen to 32, with 39 people injured. The dead include 14 learners.

Elgeyo Marakwet Governor Wisley Rotich said efforts are ongoing to reopen roads leading to the affected areas.

Heavy rains that pounded the region have now subsided, allowing easier access for rescue teams.

Rescue workers said the search for bodies may become difficult after tomorrow, but a decision will be made on the next steps.

A multi-agency team is also preparing for the burial of victims whose bodies are at the MTRH morgue. An aerial view of the affected area shows massive destruction across more than 10 villages in three wards.

An estimated 500 families have been affected, with many displaced by the deadly mudslides.

The affected villages include Kamogo, Mkeno, Moror, Murkutwo, Chesongoch, Chechan, Kabetwo, Mogil, and Kepkener. These are within the Embobut, Sambirir, Endo, and Ariti wards.

Embobut MCA Paul Kipyatich, whose area was among the worst hit, said the destruction was extensive.
