Mombasa Governor and ODM Deputy Party Leader Abdulswamad Nassir has called on party officials to set aside internal differences and rally behind the party’s candidates as Kenya prepares for upcoming by-elections.

Speaking at a town hall meeting in Mambrui, Magarini Constituency, Kilifi County, Governor Nassir emphasized the importance of discipline, solidarity, and strategic coordination within the party.

“These virtues are especially vital at a time when ODM has fielded candidates in multiple regions across the country and faces heightened political competition,” he said, underscoring the need for leaders at all levels to intensify mobilisation efforts and strengthen the party’s visibility as the polls approach.

Governor Nassir commended grassroots supporters for their steadfast commitment to the party and warned that members who issue threats or pursue divisive agendas would be dealt with accordingly.

“Divisive politics and personal feuds undermine our mission and weaken the confidence of our supporters,” he added.

The call for unity comes at a defining moment for ODM following the death of Party Leader Raila Odinga in mid-October.

His passing has prompted reflection within the party, with officials and supporters seeking to honor his legacy of resilience, democratic ideals, and commitment to justice.

Despite the emotional and political weight of this transition, optimism remains high in ODM strongholds, with local structures intensifying campaign activities and urging members to approach the by-elections with renewed discipline and shared purpose.

Governor Nassir expressed confidence that a united and focused ODM would secure decisive victories and emerge stronger from the by-elections.

However, internal wrangles have surfaced since Raila’s passing.

Some members have expressed support for President William Ruto’s broad-based government, while others remain opposed, highlighting the urgent need for reconciliation and collective focus ahead of the polls.

The succession debate has been intensified by a petition from a group calling itself ODM life members, seeking the removal of Raila’s older brother, Siaya Senator Oburu Oginga, as acting party leader.

The petitioners argue that Oburu’s appointment violated the party constitution and undermines internal democracy.

Critics contend he may lack the political vigour to hold the party together, given the coalition’s current factional divisions.

Oburu Oginga, however, has dismissed calls for his removal, insisting his appointment was a collective decision and vowing to maintain party unity.

“Those imagining they can break ODM — it will never happen. In my hands, ODM will not be divided,” he said, reinforcing his commitment to holding the party together.

As ODM prepares for the by-elections, the party’s ability to navigate succession concerns, maintain discipline, and mobilize supporters will be critical in determining its performance.

Leaders like Governor Nassir remain central to ensuring the party presents a united front, honoring Raila Odinga’s legacy while positioning ODM for continued relevance on the national stage.
