Cop arrested 20kg of suspected cannabis recovered from his house

A police officer has been arrested after 20kg of suspected cannabis sativa was recovered during an operation in Dagoretti subcounty.

The National Police Service said officers from Muthangari police station arrested their colleague following a raid at the suspect's residence that led to the recovery of the suspected narcotic drugs.

The operation was conducted after police received a tip-off from members of the public regarding the alleged illegal activities.

According to the police, officers acted on the information and searched the officer's residence, where they recovered two bags containing suspected cannabis sativa.

The recovered drugs are estimated to weigh about 20kg.

Following the recovery, the officer was taken into custody and is being held pending processing and arraignment in court.

Police said the suspected narcotics have been secured as exhibits to support investigations and any subsequent court proceedings.

"The National Police Service reaffirms its commitment to upholding the rule of law without fear or favour," NPS said.

The Service further stressed that no individual would receive preferential treatment because of their position or status.

"Any person, regardless of status or position, found to be engaging in criminal activities will be subjected to due process," the NPS added.

The arrest comes amid sustained efforts by security agencies to combat the trafficking, possession and distribution of narcotic drugs across the country.

The latest incident also highlights the role of the public in supporting law enforcement through the sharing of information.

According to the NPS, the operation that led to the officer's arrest was initiated after members of the public provided intelligence to the police.

The service encouraged Kenyans to continue reporting suspicious activities to the nearest police station or through its toll-free emergency numbers.

The operation comes a week after eight people were arrested after police recovered 250kg of cannabis during an overnight anti-narcotics operation in Githurai 44, Kasarani subcounty.

The officers raided a residential property in the Githurai 44 area, where they recovered cannabis and items believed to have been used in its packaging and processing.

Police said the recovered items included 250kg of Cannabis Sativa, 1,800 rolling papers, a 25-kilogramme bag of white polythene packaging material and a large metallic sieving mesh.

The eight suspects were arrested at the scene and taken to a police station for processing before being arraigned in court.
