Kenya's maize production saw a remarkable increase in 2023, rising by 38% to 47.6 million bags, according to the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS).
This growth marks a significant rebound from previous years, where production had dropped to 34.3 million bags in 2022.
Between 2019 and 2022, maize production fluctuated, with 44 million bags in 2019, 42.1 million in 2020, 36.7 million in 2021, and a further decline in 2022.
The 2023 increase signals improved farming conditions, likely driven by better rainfall, government interventions, and increased fertilizer subsidies.
Maize is Kenya’s staple food, and this rise in production could help stabilize food prices and enhance food security.
