Boda bodas—motorcycle taxis—are a vital part of Kenya’s transport system, offering affordable, last-mile mobility and employing over a million people, especially youth.
The sector contributes significantly to the economy, generating approximately Sh660 billion annually, contributing to 4.4 per cent to Kenya's GDP.
However, it faces major challenges.
Lack of formal training and licensing has led to high accident rates; in 2022, boda bodas accounted for 1,209 fatalities, the highest among all transport modes.
Despite these issues, boda bodas remain indispensable in Kenya’s transport landscape.
