In 2024, the United States recorded the highest number of people displaced globally due to disaster-related events, reaching a staggering 11,001,000 displacements.

This placed the country well ahead of the Philippines, which followed with 8,996,000 displacements.

Rounding out the top five were nations with massive populations and high vulnerability to natural hazards: India reported 5,431,000, China saw 3,926,000, and Bangladesh recorded 2,402,000.

Collectively, these figures illustrate the immense human toll of climate-related disasters. A majority of displacement events—54%—were triggered specifically by cyclones.

However, not all displacements were a direct result of damage; 8.3 million were pre-emptive evacuations, a proactive measure to save lives that still contributes significantly to the overall count of people forced to temporarily leave their homes.
