The number of people internally displaced due to conflict and violence has seen a stark, accelerating rise over the last decade, reaching alarming new highs.

In 2015, the global figure stood at 40.5 million, dipping slightly in the following two years before beginning a steady, steep climb.

By 2024, this figure had exploded to 83.4 million. This represents a more than doubling of the displaced population in just ten years, underscoring a deepening global crisis of insecurity and instability.

The most significant increases occurred in the latter half of the decade. From 58.1 million in 2021, the number rose sharply to 69.8 million in 2022, and then jumped again to 74.6 million in 2023. The 83.4 million total reported for 2024 does not even encompass all displaced individuals; a staggering 73.5 million of that total were displaced across just 61 countries and territories as of December 31, 2024.

This humanitarian challenge demands urgent, coordinated international action, as millions are forced to abandon their homes and livelihoods.
