National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has reaffirmed his commitment to strengthening Parliamentary engagements between Kenya and Iran.
Speaking Thursday during a courtesy call by the Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran to Kenya, Ali Gholampour, Wetang’ula emphasized the importance of collaboration through the Kenya-Iran Parliamentary Group.
He said it is more beneficial for them to occasionally meet and exchange ideas on how best to serve the people they represent.
“It is essential for Members of Parliament from both countries to meet, exchange ideas, and reinforce Parliamentary ties, fostering deeper bilateral engagements,” the Speaker said.
Wetang’ula also highlighted the critical role of Joint Commission Cooperation in overseeing bilateral initiatives between Iran and other nations.
He further emphasized that the upcoming Iran-Africa Conference and Expo presents valuable opportunities to explore new partnerships, while the Kenya-Iran Conference will enhance diplomatic and economic relations between the two nations.
“We have agreed to strengthen our partnership by enhancing direct market access for key commodities such as oil, tea, and coffee, among other areas of mutual interest,” he said.
Ambassador Gholampour on his part underscored Iran’s significant role in importing pharmaceutical products and advancing agricultural development through exhibitions.
Acknowledging the long-standing and cordial relationship between Kenya and Iran, marked by active cooperation in trade, education, agriculture, and pharmaceuticals, the two leaders agreed to explore additional areas of collaboration.
The meeting came a few days after Gholampour met with Mining and Blue Economy CS Hassan Joho.
The two leaders discussed the framework for the implementation of an MoU signed between the Government of Kenya and the Islamic Republic of Iran on the blue economy sector.
“Iran has strong institutions and infrastructure for fisheries development.
“We agreed to have learning exchange programs, collaboration on seafood processing and opportunities for partnerships in maritime affairs and mining,” Joho said.
