Equity Bank have their sights on the prestigious International Handball Genocide Memorial Tournament in Kigali, Rwanda, on May 28-29 after coming short in the national league.
The bankers lost 28-33 to champions NCPB in a nail-biting encounter on Saturday, bringing their unbeaten run to an end.
This Kigali event, in commemoration of the 1994 genocide, gathers top African clubs, providing Equity with invaluable exposure and a chance to compete at a top level.
Coach Peter Mwathi termed the tournament vital for his team’s development and growth.
“We’ll face some of the best teams in Africa, offering our players a crucial opportunity to test their skills against continental champions,” said Mwathi.
“This experience will elevate the team’s performance, boost morale, and contribute significantly to our growth.”
They resume training to put in the final touches to their preparations and departure later this week.
“We have a couple of days to finalise our preparations, review the footage of the defeat to NCPB, look at areas where we can improve, and go all out for the trophy in Rwanda,” said Mwathi
They have taken positives from the season, lessons he feels will be crucial as they challenge for the title again next season.
“The gap between us and cereals is not big. I am confident we can overpower them next season and take home the title,” said Mwathi.
The two teams drew last season before Equity came out on top in the Super Cup earlier this season.
Mwanti’s philosophy heading into the tournament will be based on good defence and creating better offence.
“We can do better defensively,” he said. “Some matches were too close for comfort. As we head to play in Rwanda, we need to be more aggressive to get more victories.”
