Two-time champions Morocco became the first team to check in for the 2024 TotalEnergies CAF African Nations Championship (CHAN).

They arrived in Nairobi ahead of what promises to be a fiercely contested Group A campaign.

The North Africans, who lifted the trophy on home soil in 2018 and again in Cameroon in 2021, touched down early in the country and are expected to head to their base camp as they prepare to open their campaign against Angola next Sunday at the Nyayo National Stadium.

Morocco's Atlas Lions, who share the record of most CHAN titles with DR Congo (two each), will once again meet their fellow two-time winners in the group stages. Hosts Kenya, Zambia and Angola complete the tough pool that will be based in Nairobi.

DR Congo and Angola are scheduled to land tomorrow afternoon as preparations intensify ahead of the opening round of matches.

The tournament, which kicks off on Saturday, will open in Dar-es-salaam, Tanzania, with all three co-hosts: Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda, welcoming 16 national teams made up exclusively of home-based players.

CAF, together with the respective Local Organising Committees, has been working around the clock to fine-tune logistics, handle final registrations, and ensure that the host cities are match-ready.

With Nairobi set to stage several high-profile fixtures in the early rounds, excitement is already building among fans and teams alike as CHAN returns to the region under the “Pamoja” spirit.

Meanwhile, Captain Allan Okello will lead Uganda’s final 25-man squad into the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), as the Cranes look to mount a strong campaign with the tournament returning to East Africa.

Head coach Morley Byekwaso named a squad exclusively drawn from the domestic league, blending youth and experience from top-flight clubs including Vipers SC, KCCA FC, SC Villa, and Kitara FC.

Placed in a tough Group C alongside Algeria, Guinea, Niger, and South Africa, Uganda will open their CHAN journey against Algeria on August 4.

With Uganda co-hosting the tournament alongside Kenya and Tanzania, the Cranes are aiming to go beyond the group stage after falling short in previous editions.

Okello, considered one of the most technically gifted midfielders in the local league, will anchor the squad alongside key players such as Yunus Sentamu, Enock Ssebagala, and Shafik Nana Kwikiriza.

The technical bench has prioritised tactical flexibility and mental strength, with preparations tailored to match the intensity expected in group stage battles.

CHAN 2024 also offers a rare chance for homegrown talent to attract interest from scouts and professional clubs, making this a pivotal stage for local stars eager to break through.

With home support expected to drive momentum, Uganda will be counting on the energy of its fans and the cohesion built in camp to deliver a historic showing.
