KCB defeated Menengai Oilers 19-5 to bag the Christie sevens title on Sunday at the RFUEA ground.

It was their second title of the Sevens season, having bagged the Driftwood crown in Mombasa last month.

The bankers, who lost the Prinsloo final to Strathmore Leos (24-7) a fortnight ago, bounced back in style as they overpowered the Nakuru-based outfit in a rain-drenched final.

Dennis Mwanja’s charges started brightly, mastering the slippery conditions and took the lead courtesy of George Ooro, with Brian Wahinya adding the extras for a 7-0 lead.

The Thika Road side controlled possession and from the resultant kickoff, Festus Shiasi dived over for an unconverted try and a 12-0 lead.

Poor decision-making and handling errors blighted the Oilers’ attack and matters went from bad to worse when co-captain Dennis Abukuse was sent to the sin bin for dissent as KCB led 12-0 at the interval.

On resumption, both teams made several errors with the wet ball and the conditions proved tricky on the playing surface. From a penalty, KCB spread the ball wide and speedstar Floyd Wabwire put in a grubber kick and dived on it to score at the try box.

Oilers got a consolation try courtesy of Samuel Ovwamu as he wrong-footed the KCB defence to land at the corner.

KCB coach Mwanja was delighted with the performance, especially after the crushing defeat his side suffered at the hands of Strathmore Leos in Nakuru a fortnight ago.

“The boys have had a superb tournament. We tweaked some of our plays and tactical strategy and it paid off now we have the day off tomorrow and start preparing for Embu Sevens next weekend,” observed Mwanja.

KCB edged hosts Quins 21-19 in hard fought semifinal while Oilers edged Strathmore Leos 24-19.

In the bronze medal match, Leos pipped Quins 24-19 in sudden death after the match had ended 19-19 in regulation time.

In the quarterfinals, Quins beat neighbours Impala 17-12 as KCB thrashed Daystar 27-0 while Strathmore Leos blanked Catholic Monks 29-7 and Oilers were too much for Nondies, winning 26-10.
