Gor Mahia goalkeeper Byrne Omondi says he is ready to fight for silverware at K’Ogalo, despite the pressure that comes with the famous green jersey.
The former Bandari FC man, who joined Gor Mahia in July following the conclusion of the 2024/25 Premier League season, said he fully understands the club’s expectations. His primary target is to help the club reclaim the national title.
The Kenyan international had a strong showing during the African Nations Championship (CHAN), played in front of home fans at Moi Stadium, Kasarani, where he kept two clean sheets in five games, conceding just twice en route to the quarter-finals.
His efforts, supported by solid teamwork, earned him the Man of the Match award in a memorable clash against eventual winners Morocco, a game the Stars partially played with 10 men following Chrispine Erambo’s red card.
“The game against Atlas Lions was the most difficult one in front of over 48,000 fans, but we composed ourselves and grabbed the important win. It is such matches that give me confidence I can handle pressure from Green Army fans,” said Omondi.
At Gor Mahia, Omondi will battle seasoned goalkeepers Gad Mathews and Kevin Omondi for the number one spot in new head coach Charles Akonnor’s squad.
“The KPL league kicks off this weekend, and we have been training hard to stay in shape. Gad and Kevin are equally good, and with around 40 matches to play in the league and domestic cup, everyone will get a chance. The best keeper will have the lion’s share, and I am ready for the competition,” he added.
Standing at 6ft 2in, the humble giant is eagerly awaiting the Mashemeji derby, Kenya’s biggest football fixture, and hopes to play a role in the historic clash.
“All matches are difficult in the KPL, but AFC Leopards, Shabana, Tusker, Bandari and Police FC are high-profile clashes that come with a lot of scrutiny. I joined K’Ogalo to win such games and write my name in the history books by clinching titles. I will give my best,” said Omondi.
Omondi is confident heading into Sunday’s Sportpesa League opener against Bidco United after winning the Sports Journalists Association of Kenya (SJAK) Personality of the Month for August.
He edged out teammates Alpha Onyango, Austin Odhiambo and former Tusker striker Ryan Ogam to win the award, which came with a 65-inch TV set and a personal trophy.
