A United Kingdom select side and another from France are the early foreign entries for the Safari Sevens at the Nyayo Stadium on October 10-12.

Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) Chief Executive Officer Thomas Odundo said the two European teams largely draw players from their respective national Sevens teams. Their presence will enhance the quality of the event and competition.

Kenya will be represented by the national sides Shujaa and Morans, while national Sevens champions KCB are on standby should any of the foreign teams withdraw.

Other teams expected include Western Province from South Africa and Uganda, Zimbabwe and Namibia national teams. Invitational sides such as Shogun Rugby, Lions Rugby and Red Wailers are expected to return.

Odundo said Shujaa and the Kenya Lionesses will use the Safari Sevens to prepare for the Tier Two competition of the World Rugby Sevens Series, which begins in March next year.

He is confident the tournament will offer strong competition and valuable match experience ahead of the global campaign.

Returning the tournament to Nyayo National Stadium is expected to boost attendance and fan engagement.

Odundo pointed out that the last time the event was held at Nyayo was in 2021, and he anticipates a large turnout due to the venue's increased capacity and accessibility.

The tournament will feature a 12-team men’s category and an eight-team women’s category.

In addition to the senior competitions, there will also be an under-16 age-grade tournament, continuing the tradition of nurturing youth talent that has been a hallmark of the Safari Sevens since its inception in 1996.

In related news, the Kenya Rugby Union has announced its Sevens Dream Team following the conclusion of the national sevens circuit. The team includes Vincent Onyala and Samuel Asati from champions KCB.

Strathmore Leos contribute three players: team captain Gabriel Ayimba, speedster Victor Odhiambo, and Nygel Amaitsa. Kabras’ Kelvin Wekesa and Oilers’ Daniel Kipchirchir complete the seven-man lineup.
