Veteran golfer Christopher Maato carded an impressive 37 stableford points to win the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) gold tournament at Kisii Sports Club.
Playing off
handicap nine, Maato beat 96 golfers drawn from 15 golf clubs across the
country to lift the title.
Maato started
playing golf in 1967. “First of all, I’m happy I won the title against a very
strong field. I have played on this course for several years; I think that
contributed to my win. I know this course like the back of my hand.”
“My target was 37 or 38 points. That’s the maximum points one can get when the course is dry,” said Maato.
Nyanza Club’s
Amneet Shah was the first runner-up with 34 points, while Geoffrey Ombachi was
the second runner-up with 34
points.
Handicap 18 Zachary
Bichage was the male winner with 36 points, while Lillian Kong’ani was the lady
winner with 30 points.
Jared Mogeni
lifted the division one winner with 32 points, while Kisii Sports Club assistant
golf captain Joseph Ogweche bagged the division two title with 31 points.
Moffat Makori was the division three winner with 30 points. Dorothy Koech was
the guest winner with 29 points, and Semenye Jimmy was the sponsor’s winner with 25
points.
Chadwick
Otachi was the first nine winner with 19 points and Pravin Orenge the second
nine winner, also with 19 points.
Kenya Golf
Union honorary secretary Jonathan Marucha, who was the chief guest, took the
men’s longest drive title, while the women’s trophy went to Vera Rorey. William
Moturi won the nearest-to-the-pin trophy.
NCIC
Commissioners Sam Kona and Danvas Makori graced the tournament, which was held
as part of celebrations to mark World Peace Day.
Marucha
promised to donate a caddy shack and starter box to Kisii Sports Club,
following a request from the golf captain, Adrian Monari. Monari further
appealed for well-wishers to put up a rain shelter on hole number 6.
Makori asked the golfers who use their positions in society to preach peace ahead of the 2027 elections.
