Junior Starlets are keen on another stab at global football as they battle Uganda in a two-legged 2025 FIFA Under-17 Women’s World Cup qualifier.
The first leg is scheduled for March 8 in Kampala, while the return leg is set for March 16 in Nairobi. The team has been sharpening their preparations at Kasarani Annex.
“The girls are motivated, ready and in high spirits,” said head coach Mildred Cheche.
“The dream of making it to the World Cup again is still alive. Many of the players from the last campaign are here, encouraging the new ones to step up. We worked hard to get to the World Cup, and we are working just as hard to return."
They have done their homework on Uganda and are prepared to build on their last year’s historic qualification.
“Playing away is always tough, but we are ready,” Cheche added. “We are pushing for maximum points, but if we don’t succeed, we will aim for at least a point and then go for the win at home,” she added.
Debutant Mwanakombo Bakari, a midfielder, is eager to make an impact.
“Playing for Kenya is a dream come true,” she said. “I was inspired by Dogo (Mwanahalima Adam) from my area at the coast. When she told me about the camp, I prepared myself. The goal is to qualify again, but this time, we want to go all the way.”
Captain Halima Imbachi, who impressed at the Kenya Secondary Schools games, is embracing her leadership role.
“Being captain is a rare
opportunity. I don’t take it
for granted,” she said. “We
know Uganda is a tough
team, but we will not let our
country down. This is a big
motivation, and it’s pushing
us to work harder.”
