Gor Mahia head coach Sinisa Mihic says the return of striker Benson Omalla will alleviate his selection dilemmas and bolster the team's offensive prowess.
Omalla's return follows his clearance by Fifa, making him eligible to compete in the Kenyan Premier League after resolving a contract dispute that occasioned a turbulent spell with Al Safa in Lebanon. Mihic said the absence of a clear-cut striker has hampered the team's ability to capitalise on the chances created.
The Serbian gaffer reckons Omalla possesses the skill set necessary to change the narrative for Gor Mahia. "The importance of a reliable goal scorer can't be overstated in a sport where the margin between victory and defeat is often razor-thin," Mihic said.
"We have had trouble converting the opportunities we generate upfront. For the majority of the season, we were without a clear-cut striker, and I think Omalla can alter this perception," he added.
Mihic said the arrival of Omalla could not be more timely for the defending champions as they prepare for a pivotal encounter against league debutants Mara Sugar at Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos on Saturday.
Gor Mahia currently sits in third place in the league, trailing leaders Kenya Police (49 points) and Tusker (48 points), highlighting the urgency for points as the season approaches a critical juncture.
The side is aiming for a record-tying 22nd league title, and Omalla's availability is expected to provide the much-needed firepower to secure vital victories.
"The competition has reached a very competitive phase, and we need to collect as many points as we can to retain our title. We need goals to win matches and we require a good striker of Omalla so calibre to convert chances," Mihic said.
"Looking ahead, the final leg of the season promises to be an exhilarating contest for us. Our ambition to secure a record-tying 22nd league title hinges on the ability to convert opportunities into goals," Mihic said.
Omalla's return to Gor Mahia was uncertain following a turbulent time with Al Safa in Lebanon, where contract disputes threatened to jeopardize his career.
The club announced that Omalla was now eligible to play in a formal statement shared on Gor Mahia's social media accounts.
"Striker Benson Omalla is now free to play for us after being cleared by FIFA; the player has been training with us for some time as we waited for clearance. We officially welcome back Omalla," the statement read.
Mihic said the psychological impact of Omalla's return should not be underestimated. "Players often feed off each other's confidence, and the presence of a prolific striker can instill a sense of belief throughout the squad. Teammates may find themselves more willing to take risks, knowing that they have a reliable finisher who can convert their efforts into tangible results."
"This synergy can be the difference between a team that merely competes and one that thrives in high-pressure situations."
