Cardinal Otunga High School coach Edwin Metobo was over the moon after dethroning Kisii School in rugby Sevens during the Kisii County Term Two games.

Cardinal Otunga High beat Kisii, the regional 15s champions, 12-0 in the final at Nyamache Boys’.

Timhoen Mogere touched down for an unconverted try to give Cardinal Otunga High a 5-0 lead at the break. Brian Nyambariga scored a try and converted to seal it in the second half.

In the semis, Cardinal Otunga defeated Nyabigena 27-0, while Kisii School overcame Kerongorori 22-5.

“It was a good win. Beating powerhouses Kisii School made it even sweeter,” said Metobo. “As we proceed to the regionals, we expect our team to compete favourably. We have what it takes to reach the national championships in Kakamega.”

Kisii School coach Edwin Morara praised his charges despite the loss. “The young squad surpassed expectations. They made us proud by qualifying for the regionals. Our target at the regionals is to reach the semi-finals,” added Morara.

Nyagichenche retained the girls’ title after beating St Anne’s Nyangoge 17-0 in the final. In the semifinals, Nyagichenche thrashed Nyabigena 37-0, while Nyangoge saw off Mesabakwa 17-7.

Nyagichenche coach Dennis Onyango said: “It was a good and competitive championship. I’m happy for the win. We are now looking forward to the regional championship.”

“Last year, we finished second at the regional level. This year, we want to go for the title,” added Onyango.

In Nyamira County, St Paul’s Gekano High School and Enkinda Mixed retained their boys and girls titles.

In the boys’ category, played on a round-robin format, Gekano recovered from an early narrow 8-7 loss against archrivals Nyambaria Boys to beat Enkinda 7-0.

Enkinda beat Nyambaria 7-5. Gekano were declared winners on points difference while Nyambaria finished second.

Enkinda thrashed Rangenyo 19-0 to retain the girls’ title. In the semis, Enkinda beat Kebabe 17-0 while Rangenyo thrashed Gesiaga 20-0.

Enkinda and Rangenyo qualified for the Nyanza regional championships to be held in Kisumu next month.
