A Nigerian national has been sentenced to 20 years in prison by a Nairobi court after pleading guilty to drug trafficking charges.
Senior Principal Magistrate Richard Koech of the Kahawa Law Courts found him guilty on three counts under Section 4(a)(ii) of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (Control) Act.
According to police, the Nigerian changed his plea following the presentation of overwhelming evidence by the prosecution.
He admitted to the charges and was subsequently convicted.
The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) confirmed that Onuh was fined Sh46.5 million for counts one, three and four. In default of payment, he will serve 20 years’ imprisonment on each count.
However, the court ordered that the sentences run concurrently and factored in the three years he has already spent in remand.
The prosecution, led by Principal Prosecution Counsel James Machirah and Prosecution Counsel Gedion Kiprono, made strong submissions during the sentencing, which influenced the court’s final ruling.
