Nearly three years after taking office, Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya is pleased that the county’s transformation is taking shape.
During Mashujaa Day celebrations in Cherangany, the former administrator-turned-governor highlighted a string of achievements anchored on three pillars—health, sports and education.
At the heart of it is the Tom Mboya Mother and Child Hospital, now fully complete and set for opening by December.
The modern facility, he said, will complement the County Referral Hospital in delivering quality healthcare closer to home.
“Our people deserve quality health care within their borders,” Natembeya said.
“With these two hospitals, no mother or child should have to travel to Eldoret or Bungoma for treatment.”
The governor also unveiled progress on the Sh600 million Kitale Stadium, a 20,000-seater arena that promises to become a regional sporting hub by next year.
“This stadium is not just concrete and steel: it’s a home for talent, discipline and dreams.”
In education, Natembeya celebrated the county’s school milk programme, which has boosted attendance by nearly 50 per cent across 434 Early Childhood Development Education centres. He also noted a 70 per cent funding increase for vocational training centres to equip youth with technical and entrepreneurial skills.
Beyond classrooms and stadiums, Natembeya is also pushing a bold environmental agenda—planting at least 11 million trees annually to restore the Cherangany and Mt Elgon water towers and safeguard wetlands that shelter the endangered Sitatunga antelope.
In agriculture, the county has vaccinated over 10,000 head of cattle against foot and mouth disease, shielding farmers from devastating losses.
The governor capped his address by announcing the third edition of the Governor’s Cup football tournament, which kicks off October 31, to scout for talent that could one day propel Trans Nzoia to the Kenya Premier League.
Calling for unity and patriotism, Natembeya urged residents to honour Kenya’s heroes and praised Raila Odinga as “a defender of democracy and a true patriot”.
