Driven by Governor Stephen Sang’s push for quality healthcare, Nandi County has hit a 90 per cent routine immunisation coverage rate.

He said the county is keen to attain maximum performance in key health indicators, including immunisation.

"Our target is to ensure that, as far as indicators like immunisation are concerned, we attain 100 per cent coverage as we strive to ensure access to quality healthcare in Nandi," Sang said.

The county has been ranked ninth nationally in routine immunisation performance following the successful conclusion of the Big Catch-Up Campaign, which achieved an overall coverage rate of 90 per cent among children under one year of age.

The national recognition places Nandi among Kenya's top 10 best-performing counties, which Sang said is a testament to the county's aggressive outreach strategy.

"Records show that we are among the best in routine immunisation coverage, but we are targeting to achieve 100 per cent coverage," the governor said.

During the recent intensive drive, designed to push routine immunisation coverage to 100 per cent, the county conducted 343 outreach sessions, representing 98 per cent of all planned outreaches, demonstrating a strong operational commitment to reaching communities across every ward.

According to official county health data, 6,668 children under 12 months were immunised against an initial target of 7,451, translating to the 90 per cent coverage that secured the county's ninth-place national ranking.

Health and sanitation chief officer Fred Kiptum praised medics for their dedication but stressed that the momentum must continue.

He called upon Nandi residents to ensure every child under one year of age is taken to the nearest health facility to receive all recommended routine immunisations.

Kiptum also confirmed that vaccine supply is not a limiting factor.

He said vaccines are readily available in all 194 immunising facilities spread across Nandi County, encouraging caregivers to visit the nearest facility to close the remaining 10 per cent gap.

Kiptum said the national ranking now serves as an accolade and a challenge, with health teams across the county shifting focus to reaching children who missed the campaign through targeted facility-based services and follow-ups by community health volunteers.

"We are aiming not just to maintain our top-10 status, but to improve upon it and ensure all children in Nandi get vaccinated as required," he said.

The health officials spoke as they handed a report on the immunisation exercise to Governor Sang.
