Deputy President Kithure Kindiki on Friday chaired a meeting to review the status of ongoing road infrastructure projects across the country's 47 counties

The meeting, held at Harambee House Annex in Nairobi, brought together Roads and Transport Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir and other senior government officials responsible for implementing the national infrastructure programme.

During the consultation, the DP also receive an update on the proposed modernisation of Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), one of the government's flagship infrastructure projects.

According to Kindiki, the government reviewed progress on road projects currently underway across the country and assessed the scope of works and expected milestones for the JKIA Modernisation Project.

"Received status update on ongoing road projects across the 47 Counties and on the scope of works and expected milestones on the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport Modernisation Project," the Deputy President said.

He noted that the government's national roads programme has gained momentum following the settlement of pending bills owed to contractors, enabling the resumption of projects that had stalled in previous years.

"Our national roads programme has resumed with the Government having cleared Sh177 billion of pending bills owed to contractors of roads that stalled in the 2020-2021 period," Kindiki said.

Kindiki further added that over the past year, the government has paid Sh270 billion to road contractors, with construction currently underway on approximately 8,000 kilometres of bitumen roads spread across all 47 counties.

According to Kindiki, work on the airport upgrade commenced this week and is expected to cost approximately Sh155 billion.

The airport expansion project is expected to enhance passenger handling capacity, improve operational efficiency and strengthen Kenya's position as a regional aviation hub.

Friday's meeting forms part of the government's routine monitoring of major development projects.
