Kitui East MP Nimrod Mbai of UDA and nominated ODM senator Beth Syengo have been appointed to spearhead broad-based government initiatives in Ukambani.
The two were handed the mandate during the signing of an MoU between President William Ruto and ODM chief Raila Odinga at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) on Friday.
The duo will be at the forefront of the collaborative effort aimed at enhancing civic engagement and fulfilling the commitments outlined in the MoU between Ruto and Raila.
“We're determined to be the face of this broad agenda, ensuring the voices of Ukambani residents are front and center,” Mbai remarked.
The MoU highlights critical areas of focus, including the implementation of the National Dialogue Committee (NADCO) report, promoting inclusivity, boosting devolution, and safeguarding the livelihoods of youth.
It also tackles pressing issues such as national debt, corruption, government efficiency and protection of citizen rights.
Mbai, a key player in the region and UDA’s chairman in Kitui county, joined voices with Syengo and promised to change the political landscape in Ukambani.
They said their partnership is not just about collaboration but reimagining governance to prioritise the needs of the people.
Ruto and Raila appended their signatures to the Memorandum of Understanding flanked by their respective party officials.
According to the MoU, the two leaders will first work towards full implementation of the NADCO report.
The MoU listed inclusivity in all spheres of public life as
the second agenda they will be exploring.
Ruto and Raila acknowledged that while the Constitution of Kenya is clear on the rights of minorities and marginalised people in the country, not enough has been done almost 15 years later to uphold these rights by fully implementing the provisions of the supreme law.
“Kenya belongs to all persons regardless of their ethnicity, religion, generation, or geographic location. All Kenyans are equal and all are entitled to an equitable budgetary resource allocation and opportunities in public appointments,” the MoU states.
