Former East African Court of Justice (EACJ) judge Charles Nyachae has expressed confidence in leading the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) if given the opportunity.

Nyachae said while he is aware of the challenges and immense pressure that comes with the position, he possesses the skills necessary to navigate them while executing his mandate.

He said having previously served as the chairperson of the Commission for the Implementation of the Constitution (CIC), he believes his experience equips him to manage diverse personalities effectively.

“If you ask me about my personality, people have told me and I believe it is true,  that one of the gifts that God gave me is to listen. This is very important when you are in such an environment,” he said.

“That way you can be able to manage people a little bit better.”

Nyachae, who was appearing before the IEBC Selection Panel for vetting for the chairperson post, emphasised that he neither intends to risk his life for the role nor compromise his integrity.

He revealed that he had been warned against applying for the position, with some suggesting that taking it would mean being prepared to lose either his life or his integrity.

Nyachae insisted that despite all the challenges, he has the courage and determination to take on the job.

Nyachae is among 11 candidates shortlisted for the post of IEBC chairperson position.

Others interviewed in the morning were Naivasha Law Courts Chief Magistrate Abdulqadir Lorot Ramadan and former Judiciary Chief Registrar Anne Amadi.

Edward Katama Ngeywa was also scheduled to be interviewed Monday afternoon.

The three-day exercise will end on Wednesday and pave way for interviews of 105 individuals shortlisted for the position of commissioners.

Candidates who applied for the positions of member will be interviewed from Thursday, March, 27 to April 24.

The venue of the interviews will be at the College of Insurance South C, Nairobi.
