Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga /HANDOUT

Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga has raised concerns over what she described as an orchestrated effort to mislead the public about the circumstances surrounding the murder of Kasipul MP Ong’ondo Were.

Speaking during a visit to the late MP’s home, Wanga alleged that a wave of disinformation on social media was intended to distract from the investigation into his killing.

She insisted that it is a plot that is well mobilised and executed by people not mentioned.

“I want to say it here: the disinformation that has flooded social media is not by coincidence. It appears well-orchestrated and mobilised, possibly even funded, with the aim of diverting attention from the murder of Were,” she claimed, without naming any individuals or groups.

Governor Wanga further claimed that Were had repeatedly reported threats to his life to law enforcement.

“Were said multiple times that his life was in danger. I understand that he even wrote to the Inspector General of Police. We need to hear what action was taken in response to those concerns,” she said.

Wanga insisted that they need answers and not excuses.

“We will not take it lying down. We have counted one too many. Were was killed like a chicken, he was humiliated like a thief, and he never stole from anybody. We don’t want stories and cover-ups,” she stated.

On Friday, the Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI) said they had narrowed down to potential suspects in the gruesome murder of Kasipul MP Ongóndo Were.

The sleuths said they now have significant leads on who the perpetrators of the heinous act could be and are pursuing all possible angles.

“This detailed analysis has yielded significant leads, enabling investigators to narrow down to potential suspects. While the motive for this heinous act remains under investigation, preliminary investigations suggest that this was a targeted and premeditated act. The DCI is pursuing all angles to uncover the circumstances surrounding this incident,” the DCI said.

Were was gunned down in Nairobi on April 30 by unknown assailants riding on a motorcycle near the City Mortuary roundabout at around 7:30 p.m.

In what now appears to be a chilling premonition, the MP had appealed to security agencies to protect him, stating that he was being trailed.

On Thursday, the National Police Service said the fatal shooting of the Kasipul Member of Parliament appears to have been both “targeted and predetermined”.
