One person was killed and 17 others were injured after a building they were in collapsed in Waruku area, Nairobi.

The semi-permanent two-storey building collapsed on Sunday night, police and locals said.

The upper floor of the building had church members who were singing and praying.

This is believed to have weakened the structure, leading to its collapse.

There were also tenants who lived in the house.

According to police, there were 33 people who were present at the time of the incident.

At least 17 of them sustained soft tissue injuries after the slab of the structure collapsed.

The deceased was identified as Joseph Ogolla, 60.

The injured were taken to a hospital in the area where they were treated.

The body was moved to the mortuary pending autopsy and investigations.

Nairobi police boss George Sedah said they are investigating the tragedy.

“We want to know how the facility was operating in the residential house and who approved it. It is unfortunate someone died and some are injured,” he said.

He said they had invited officials from the county government to also investigate the incident.

Locals had complained of noise pollution in the area before the incident happened.

County officials are struggling to address the menace of noise pollution from churches and bars in estates.

This is because some of the facilities are illegal, while others have been licensed by the same county officials.

Residents have been complaining of the menace, which has affected their lives at large.

The county government has been promising to take action in vain amid growth of the issue.

Meanwhile, a man was killed in a fight over the control of a water-vending shed in Kariobangi, Nairobi.

Elvis Owino Oloo, 27, died from injuries inflicted in the clash with a group over the shed.

Police said the main assailant escaped the scene. Efforts to trace the assailant are ongoing, police said.

The body was moved to the mortuary pending autopsy and investigations.

The other officials running the shed were interrogated as part of the probe into the deadly clash.
