Police have interviewed five individuals and recorded their statements in connection with the alleged abduction of Juja MP George Koimburi.
Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja confirmed that investigators are actively pursuing multiple leads and plan to interrogate the MP himself “at the earliest opportunity,” although he noted that initial attempts to reach Koimburi had failed.
“We will continue to pursue all leads, analyse forensic evidence, and ensure that any perpetrators are brought to justice,” Kanja said in a statement to newsrooms.
The development comes just days after Koimburi disappeared amid ongoing investigations into a land fraud case. According to Kanja, the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) had already approved charges against the MP.
“On Friday, 23 May 2025, the MP, fully aware of the police's intention to arrest him, evaded arrest by escaping on a motorcycle with his private security and switched off his mobile phone,” the police boss said. “His car, occupied only by his driver, was intercepted, and the driver was arrested but later released after recording a statement.”
Koimburi reportedly resurfaced on May 26, the same day that a video began circulating online, allegedly showing the MP in distress, abandoned in a farm in Juja.
However, Kanja cast doubt on the video, stating that investigators had visited the location depicted in the footage and found inconsistencies in the vegetation and road dimensions. “It was established that the two did not match,” he said.
Further raising suspicion, the caretaker of the coffee farm seen in the video denied witnessing any such incident.
Police say they also visited the hospital where Koimburi had reportedly been treated after his reappearance.
However, according to Kanja, the hospital did not disclose details of the treatment administered, complicating efforts to verify the nature or extent of any injuries.
The case has stirred political controversy, with Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka condemning police claims that the MP staged his own abduction. Speaking outside Karen Hospital after visiting Koimburi on Tuesday, Kalonzo said, “It is a shame for anyone to suggest the legislator abducted himself. We must not trivialise such serious matters.”
